ANTIQUE ORIGINAL SWISS WRISTWATCH

This auction represents a
unique example of the original antique timepiece of one of the most known and recognized Swiss brands. It
was made by “Omega Factory” in 1899.
This admirable timepiece
features a mother-of-pearl ORIGINAL
porcelain enamel dial, decorated with gold inlay. The ivory-colored face features a 60 minute outer track border with
gold minute markers, black Roman numerals, Skeleton-style hands and a slightly
sunken sub-second’s dial. The fantastic-beautiful dial is branded ‘OMEGA’.
This model of timepiece has a
silver four-piece, double hinged case.
The existence of an inner dust cover lid is a good sign of a quality watch. It
was used to protect the mechanism from dust and debris and to provide an extra
layer of protection from shock or moisture. The inside of back lid has the old trademark Omega symbol and case
reference number #1.685.577. This
number on the case places the date of production of this piece at 1899. On the inner lid
there are inscriptions and medals from
prestigious exhibitions where Omega has won. On
the back lid there is a vacant
beautifully engraved spot for monogram.
This is a Silver watch with a set of antique silver
hallmarks. The inside of the case lids is stamped 0.800. There is also Swiss
(Wood Grouse) and German (Crescent Moon/Crown) silver hallmarks, which are
used in conjunction with a maker's mark and a decimal silver standard mark.
The winding crown is in very good shape and operates properly.
This unique watch is mechanical and completely original. Pay attention: Under the micrometer for
set of the accuracy of the watch there is a
logo of OMEGA Factory that once again confirms the authenticity of this
watch. The original movement with
genuine jewels is in an excellent status which was very well saved,
considering age of this watch.
At
first, this interesting timepiece was acutely-fashionable watch. OMEGA has
skillfully learnt to put the high-technological mechanism in flat volume. The
pocket was not bulging any more that it was extremely important at a silk
waistcoat. Especially if for the man on a waist each centimeter is important.
Later this watch was remade for use as a
wristwatch.

HISTORY: The History of a
Successful Company Omega was founded by Louis Brandt at La Chaux – de – Fonds, Switzerland in
1848 as a assembly workshop. In 1879, after his death, his two sons Louis Paul
and César started the in-house manufacturing so they started having total
production control. One year later, Omega moved into a small factory that
became a huge one when 12 months later they bought the entire building. In
1903, they both died leaving the company in 24 years old, Paul Emile Brandt’s
hands. Because of the crisis that the Second World War left, he had to work
really hard in order to face the economic difficulties. He merged Omega with
Tissot calling the new company SSIH. The SSIH group continued to grow and
multiply under his leadership and, by the seventies, it had become Switzerland’s
number one producer of finished watches and number three in the world.

Something extraordinary happened on this very day, 40 years ago. 2 men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, landed on the Moon and forever altered the annal of human history. To commemorate this momentous occasion, timepiece maker OMEGA just release a special edition – Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11: 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.

A direct descent of the Original Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch worn by Aldrin to the lunar surface (Armstrong left his back on the Lunar Module as a system backup), the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition feature the same shatter-proof acrylic crystal, Hesalite. And like the original, a black dial face powered by OMEGA’s reliable calibre 1861 movement.

In addition, a few alterations were incorporate into the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition. In place of cloth strap, a stainless steel bracelet securely fasten the watch around the wrist. A small commemorative medallion sits where the small seconds counter was. Imprinted on it is the Apollo 11 Mission Patch, designed by the 3rd member of that historic mission, astronaut Michael Collins. It features an eagle landing on the lunar surface with an olive branch of peace, with earth on the horizon. Another is inscription of 02:56 GMT in red on the dial face, the exact time Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon and uttered the words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” On its back, the Apollo 11 Mission Patch is engraved along with the limited edition number, the time 02:56 GMT, the date July 21st, 1969, when Armstrong and Aldrin set foot on surface. Plus the words ” The First Watch Worn On The Moon”.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Limited Edition includes a 42 mm silver medallion in honor of the mission, an original omega box along with its Certificate of Authenticity.

Condition: This item was bought in 2003, and it's obvious it's never been worn.  Original protective plastic is still on the back.  Original protective plastic for the front and band will be included (it was removed so pics could be taken).  There is simply no evidence of use on this watch at all, and if you put it next to a new one the new one might look worse!

Timepiece employs an automatic, self-winding movement, so a battery is never required.

BEFORE YOU SEND A QUESTION, PLEASE READ THIS: An informed buyer is essential to a successful transaction, so if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  However, please understand that I cannot answer anything historical/speculative in nature (age, service history, etc.).  In general, I can only provide answers to questions about issues I can personally verify (i.e. current condition).  I try to address the most important issues within the auction itself, but if you have a question that you feel is critical and unanswered in the auction by all means please do ask and I'll respond ASAP. 

RETURN POLICY: As a general rule, I only accept returns if an item is damaged in shipment, or if there is a bonafide defect with the item that wasn't disclosed in the auction.  I do NOT accept returns for "buyer's remorse," size issues (measurements are included in the auction), or anything else that could have been avoided by reading the auction description or viewing the pics.
